North again

I spent time in Denmark on my way up to Norway, and then very quickly on my way back down. Copenhagen was my first stop, and I was truly impressed. But before I tell you anything about Copenhagen, I've got something very important to say:

My train took a ferry.

My train took a ferry!

From Puttgarden in Germany to Rødbyhavn in Denmark.

It was only a little train.

Anyway, I didn't take any pictures of the train on the ferry as it would have just looked like it was inside a shed or something. But here's a picture I took from the ferry as we crossed:

Copenhagen is a beautiful city, with wide streets, palatial buildings. It surprised me, although I'm not sure what I'd actually been expecting. But I only ended up staying one night because I was staying in a fairly dodgy hotel.

I could almost do a blog post entirely about the Stroget. Actually, I will do a post entirely about the Stroget. And then more about the city another time.

The Stroget is a paved pedestrian-only mall, with lots of expensive (tourist-trap) shops and cafes along its sides. Actually, Denmark is generally fairly expensive (so is Norway). Just a warning! I arrived about 9 pm, and after settling into my hostel went wandering. After a couple of hours, I stopped for a hot chocolate. I found the Europa Cafe on the Stroget, and it had Valrhona hot chocolate. This has to be maybe the best hot chocolate I've ever tasted (and I've guest-blogged about it on Kwaffee, so I'm not going to go on about it here). Here's a picture. You'll have to imagine the taste.

The next day, I walked along the Stroget again while I was exploring the city. In general, the city has a lot of fountains, and this was one of my favourite (for the bulrushes up the top):

And here is the Stroget itself. It curves!
