A winter poem

Carlton Gardens

Suicidal possums scamper
Metres from suicidal pedestrians
Who jaywalk in front of trucks.
(That's not a self-description.)
Exhibition Building
Decked out like Castle Fairy
With solstice lights.
Two more months of winter -
Then two of spring,
Then winter again.
Yesterday, I saw the trees
Still had half their autumn leaves.
Today, the tiny, sharpened raindrops
Add modica of mass
And each leaf falls.
A possum startles,
Scared by a falling leaf,
And runs across the path before my feet.
